Should I give money to someone on the street?
"We recommend that instead of giving money to a person on the street that your donation be made to an organization that will answer the needs of that person. Most often the person who is asking for money on the street is out of control with the problem – whether it's mental health or substance abuse or something else. In all cases, people are better served by seeking the appropriate resource to deal with their problem in a constructive way rather than acting in a renegade fashion on the street and do it by themselves. The fact that their there is all the evidence necessary to show necessary that they are not succeeding in what they're doing."

Why are people homeless?
"People are homeless for a variety of reason, but the common thread among all homeless people is extreme poverty. At The Baltimore Station, we most typically see substance abuse, mental illness, living in overcrowded situations and domestic violence as the main factors for homelessness in our residents. Research varies over the reason for homelessness, but roughly 1 out of every 4 people "on the streets" is an addict and about 50% of women and children are homeless because of domestic violence.”
