Frequently asked questions

What is an in-kind donation?

An in-kind donation is a non-cash gift of goods or services that helps a nonprofit fulfill its mission. Examples include hygiene products, household supplies, office equipment, food, professional services, or other needed items. These donations help reduce operating costs so more financial resources can be directed toward serving veterans.

Why do nonprofits need in-kind donations?

In-kind donations help nonprofits stretch every donated dollar by reducing everyday expenses. Items such as cleaning supplies, toiletries, office materials, furniture, and other essential goods allow organizations like The Baltimore Station to focus more resources on providing housing, recovery services, workforce development, and supportive programs for veterans experiencing homelessness. Every donated item helps us better serve the men and women who rely on our programs.

What items can I donate to The Baltimore Station?

The Baltimore Station is always grateful for in-kind donations that directly support the veterans in our programs. Our most-needed items include new twin-size sheet sets, shower shoes (flip-flops), disposable plates, cups, cutlery, and napkins, backpacks, and gift cards to businesses such as Royal Farms, Giant, Walmart, CVS, 7-Eleven, Uber, and Visa. Our current needs may change throughout the year, so we encourage you to check our Amazon Wish List or contact us before making a donation.

Do you have an Amazon wishlist?

Yes! The Baltimore Station maintains an up-to-date Amazon Wish List featuring our most-needed items. Our clinical team regularly updates the list to reflect current needs, including clothing, personal care items, household essentials, and supplies for therapeutic and recreational activities. Shopping directly from our wish list is an easy way to ensure your donation meets an immediate need.

What items cannot be accepted?

To best serve our veterans and manage our available storage space, we are unable to accept women’s or children’s clothing, used men’s clothing, used furniture, used blankets, or used pillows. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to contact us if you have questions about a specific donation item.

Can I donate new or gently used items?

Most of the items we distribute directly to veterans must be new to ensure safety, hygiene, and dignity. While we may occasionally accept certain gently used items, we recommend contacting us before making your donation to confirm current needs and acceptance guidelines.

Where do I drop off donations?

All in-kind donations are accepted by appointment to ensure staff are available to receive and properly distribute your gift. Donations can be dropped off at 140 W. West Street, Baltimore, MD 21230. Please contact us to schedule a convenient drop-off time.

Can someone pick up my donation?

Because of limited staff availability, we are generally unable to provide residential donation pickups. However, we may be able to arrange pickups for larger corporate or organizational donations on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us to discuss your donation.

Do you accept furniture donations?

At this time, The Baltimore Station is unable to accept furniture donations.

Do you accept clothing donations?

Yes! We are currently accepting new men’s clothing that directly benefits the veterans participating in our programs. If you have questions about specific clothing items or sizes, please contact us before donating.

Do you accept food donations?

Yes! We greatly appreciate food donations from individuals, businesses, schools, faith communities, and other organizations. Shelf-stable food items must be unopened, free of dents or damage, and within their expiration dates. Prepared meals should be freshly made, safely packaged, and coordinated with our staff in advance to ensure they meet our scheduling and food safety guidelines.

Can I organize a donation drive for The Baltimore Station?

Absolutely! Donation drives are a wonderful way to support veterans while bringing your community together. Many businesses, schools, faith communities, civic organizations, and neighborhood groups host drives to collect our most-needed items. Our team is happy to provide a current wish list, promotional materials, and guidance to help make your donation drive a success.

How can I find out what items are currently needed?

Our most-needed items change throughout the year based on the needs of the veterans we serve. The best way to stay up to date is by visiting our Amazon Wish List or contacting our Volunteer Coordinator, Pete Crispino, at pcrispino@baltimorestation.org or 410-752-4454 ext. 113.
